Numbers aplenty at dog trials

NUMBERS are again strong for this weekend’s King Country Charity Dog trials. They are taking place at At Taringamotu Otamakahi Trust Farm, situated about 35 minutes north and inland from Taumarunui. Known formerly as the Piopio Charity Dog Trial Club, this dog trial was founded in the late 1960s by local triallists Cyril Perry, Les Knight and Des Murphy (all now deceased). It began as a small annual heading trial held at the Piopio golf course. As the trial grew in popularity, it was moved to the Piopio Domain and all funds raised were donated to chosen charities. With increasing numbers of competitors, it was moved to Piopio Station where there were better facilities. The 2002 trial was relocated to Waitoru Station, Piopio. Charity trial secretary and competitor Robyn Stephens said there will be plenty of action this weekend.

GREAT EVENT “It’s always a great event and again the numbers are pretty good, we had a smaller event last year, so we’re excited we are able to welcome back the competitors from like Northland, Hawkes Bay and other areas to compete.” In 2010 extremely dry weather in Piopio during spring/summer and declining sheep numbers forced the committee to shift the trial events to Taringamotu-Otamakahi Trust Farm, Taumarunui. It continues to be held there and where there are now permanently established courses. Stephens said it’s a fantastic event and they’re excited to have plenty of out-of-town competitors taking part. “This stuff is pretty much our off-season sort of thing. “Winter is busy with the main Tux trials and then in spring and summer we do a few of these events. “It just keeps people going and the dogs interested.”

285 DOGS This year 220 heading dogs are taking part, while 65 huntaways are also lining up to compete in a variety of challenges. All the proceeds are going to the Westpac Air Ambulance and Stephens said it’s a great way to give back to the community. The event kicks off tomorrow and will run through until Sunday.
