SUNDAY was the second part of the 2022 Te Kūiti Trapshooters Championships. Shooters came from Rotorua, Huntly, Taumarunui and New Plymouth to contest the second round, club president Neil Pratt said. There were about 35 shooters, he said. There were seven squads and they shoot in squads of five. The Len Tarrant Memorial High Gun Trophy was taken by Karl Lapwood. Lapwood, from Huntly, had the highest aggregate in the first and second part of the club champs. “He’s only a new shooter,” Neil said. “He did really well, shot consistently across two shooting weekends and had the highest aggregate points over two events. “Lots of new shooters are getting firearms licences, and lots of new shooters are joining the club. I think people are realising they have got to get stuck in and live life. “We host the police firearms training at the gun club. I think it’s Mountain Safety Council that do it and they have lots of young people applying for their firearms licence. “They hold that about every two months at the club. The police trainers come out and they are training young people on firearms safety so they can sit their firearms licence. “The club has lots of interactions with the police and firearms safety and Mountain Safety Council getting firearms licencing training.” Shooters competed in the day’s club champs of Single Rise, Points Score and Single Barrel. The weather held off for a further trophy shoot sponsored by Pratt’s Group. Next month the club hosts the Vic Hydes Trap Mechanics Shoot.
