ORGANISERS of Te Kūiti’s Breast is Best breakfast Doreen “Dorz” Olsson and Christine Dempsey are looking forward to seeing people at Waitomo Club next Thursday in support of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.
THE King Country is getting stuck into fundraising for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, with a pink breakfast and fun walk on next week. Business owners Christine Dempsey and Doreen “Dorz” Olsson have been hard at work organising a Breast is Best breakfast with the support of Waitomo Club, Te Kūiti, which will be the venue for the fundraiser on Thursday next week. Those who have bought tickets from Ador Shoes or The Flower Fairy get breakfast cooked by club manager Amanda Kiddie and the opportunity to hear breast cancer stories from women who have experienced it firsthand. There will be prizes up for grabs, with raffle tickets being sold outside of New World Te Kūiti tomorrow. The Flower Fairy owner Christine said it was mindblowing to see how many businesses wanted to get involved in sponsoring the event and included in the prize pool is a night at Omaru Downs. “It has been really humbling to see the willingness of people to donate.” Ador Shoes owner Dorz said she was proud of all the businesses which have come together. “In these hard times people are still giving.” In Ōtorohanga, organisers of a pink ribbon walk are encouraging participants to show up wearing their best pink outfits. From 5.30pm on Wednesday fun walkers, who can pre-pay their $20 donation to Little Scissors in Ōtorohanga or bring money on the night, will gather in the Jim Baker Memorial Park. Children participate for free. They’ll then set off on the stopbank and walk along the river towards the industrial area before turning around and doing the return trip. There will be no walking on footpaths next to roads. Co-organiser Dianna Janett said the event was designed to be lighthearted and fun, and had been well supported by local businesses which had donated towards raffle prizes. The local Ōtorohanga Lions Club are getting involved, Dianna said, with a donation of sausages and labour for a sausage sizzle. Raffle tickets and sausages can be purchased on the night, so Dianna said it was a good idea for people to bring some cash with them. All proceeds go to the Breast Cancer Foundation. Next week is the annual pink ribbon street appeal for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. People can sign up until Thursday to volunteer for two-hour time slots during Friday and Saturday.
