PIOPIO farmer William “Bill” Burr has been sentenced for unlawfully possessing two firearms and ammunition, discovered during and in the aftermath of a home invasion two years ago. Burr was charged with possessing a firearm without a license, relating to the night his home was entered on October 1 in 2020, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition, both found in his home a week after the event. At a hearing at Hamilton District Court on Tuesday, Burr was sentenced to six months community detention and 400 hours community work. He was also ordered to forfeit both firearms and the ammunition. In May Burr was cleared by a jury of all charges relating to him cutting a fingertip off of a teenage intruder (King Country News, May 19, 2022).
