BEATTIE Home residents Dorothy Hoar, Joan Jenkinson, Enid Bell, Dorothy Pearse and Mavis Walters enjoyed a pink high tea last week in support of the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.
THOUSANDS of dollars have been raised for the Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) from Pink Ribbon events held around the King Country last week. A good-sized crowd gathered at Waitomo Club in Te Kūiti on Thursday morning to support the foundation’s work. About 50 people clad in pink sat for breakfast cooked by Amanda Kiddie and listened to stories of those affected by cancer. In a welcome speech co-organiser Christine Flexman noted the significance of fundraising for BCF. “It’s close to everybody’s heart. Everyone has a connection.” Afterward, she said she was pleased with how the morning went and was stoked to have raised more than $3500 for the Breast Cancer Foundation. The money was raised through a combination of ticket and raffle sales. Christine said she was heartened to receive a message from Te Kūiti Primary School principal Melissa Anderton ahead of the raffle sale two Fridays ago, offering the manpower of some of her senior students. “They were a great help,” Christine said. In Ōtorohanga, Friends of Beattie Home, residents and members of the board of directors attended a pink high tea last Wednesday – complete with pink-dyed dollops of cream on pikelets. Diversional therapist Yvonne Corrigan said everyone had been touched by cancer and everyone knew someone who had been affected. The high tea was an opportunity for residents to dress up and show their support for BCF, Yvonne said. “We want to support and encourage the ones who have survived breast cancer while also supporting and encouraging further research.” A raffle was held by Friends of Beattie Home prior to the tea with proceeds going to fund a lifting device for use in the home. Friend of Beattie Home Colleen Rapley took the opportunity at the tea party to present the raffle prize to Jan Kimber, which had been donated back to Beattie by the winner.
