December 30: Mōkau Fishing Club Corson Tyres four-day fishing competition prizegiving at Awakino Hotel. BBQ, costs $5 for non-members and non-anglers. Final weigh in 3.30pm-4pm.

20m Slipn’Slide, at Tongaporoutu beach carpark from 2pm. Free entry.

December 31: See in the New Year at Awakino Hotel with its New Year’s Eve party – live music included, starting at 8pm.

January 1: Mōkau movies – free movies at Mōkau hall, 1pm, 3pm and 17pm in recognition of the opening of Jailhouse Theatre.

Sand sculpture competition, 12 am at 19 Clifton Rd. Enter as a group or individual to win prizes for best sand sculptures. Free entry.

January 6: Twilight bowls. Come and have a social bowl with the Awakino Bowling Club every Wednesday night throughout summer at Briscoe St, Awakino. $2 a player from 5.30 pm. Ph Gail 067529104.

January 7: Mokau Art and Craft market – live music, local crafts and a car club at the Tainui Wetere Domain from 10am till 3pm.

January 14: Mokau Fishing Club, ‘Take a kid fishing”. Meet at the north boat ramp, bring a rod, drink and sunhat. Younger kids must have parent or guardian supervision. This will be followed by a lolly scramble and sausage sizzle at the Tainui Wetere Domain. All kids receive a certificate and there are great sponsored giveaway gifts.
