New World to open later this month

FOLLOWING about 15 months operating from a temporary pop-up location, Taumarunui New World is to move to a new building on its previous site on January 24.

The store shifted operations to the Taumarunui Athletic Sports Centre, 39 Turaki St, in September 2021, while the 55-year-old building at 10 Hakiaha St was demolished and a new one built to replace it there.

Owner-operator Aiyad Khan said the state-of-the-art new building was 40% bigger than the previous one, employing around 90 people.

There would six self-checkouts and 98 carparks, with dedicated spaces for parents with children and for customers with trailers.

“It’s just two weeks until we open our brand-new store, and we couldn’t be more excited,” Aiyad said.

“While it’s very much business as usual in the temporary store, the team are working flat out behind the scenes to get everything ready over at the new one.

“This week, we’re working very closely with our suppliers to ensure we receive everything the people of Taumarunui expect to see available on our shelves, plus a few additional surprises.

“We’ve got our longer-life products in already – think bottles, cans, packets that have a long shelf life. And closer to the opening day, we’ll start receiving all our fresh produce.

“There’s also a big focus on training up the team to use state-of-the-art equipment we’re installing. When customers come in, we want to provide a seamless experience, so it’s vital we get the training right so we can hit the ground running.”   Aiyad said there were still some roles available if people wanted to join the team.

“Speaking from my own experience, the supermarket sector is a dynamic and exciting industry to be a part of. Look online or come to the pop-up store if you’re interested in making an application.”

The pop-up store at New World Taumarunui is scheduled to close at 8pm on Saturday, January 21 with the new one scheduled to open its doors at 8am on January 24.
