Ōtorohanga

January 11

POLICE were called when a farmhouse in Ōtorohanga was burgled between January 10 and 11. A washing machine and dryer and electronics were stolen from the house and a lawnmower from the shed.

January 12

A VEHICLE rear-ended another on Maniapoto St, Ōtorohanga. Police were told the car in front indicated left, but turned right at the last moment. One car was damaged and had to be towed.

January 14

POLICE arrested a 22-year-old Ōtorohanga man after he became violent towards them. Officers were called to a family harm matter where the man had broken a window at a house and suffered injuries. He was located away from the scene in a public area, which was a breach of his court release conditions. He allegedly became violent towards police and spat at them. The man was charged with breaching court release conditions, assault and resisting police. He was due to appear in Hamilton District Court on Tuesday.

January 15

A WOMAN stopped by police for speeding in a residential area of Ōtorohanga in the afternoon was found to be driving with a breath alcohol level of twice the criminal limit of 400 micrograms.

Te Kūiti January 10

COMMERCIAL batteries were targeted in burglaries of KiwiRail property at rail crossings.

The batteries are used as a fail-safe mechanism for signals at the crossings and their theft causes safety concerns for police.

AN experienced tramper who took a wrong turn and fell down a steep bank in poor weather was rescued by police and Land Search and Rescue.

The tourist was walking a portion of the Te Araroa Trail in rural Waitomo when she slipped down the bank, being stopped part way down by a tree. Police said the rescue was complicated by a storm with specialist rope skills required to get her out of the tricky spot.

The woman was equipped with all the required tramping gear, including a GPS locater and she was in contact with rescuers by phone throughout the mission.

She was rescued at about 7pm.

Police said “tremendous assistance” was provided by contractors and farmers who provided valuable local knowledge.

January 12

POLICE charged a 67-year-old woman with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle when she was found driving a stolen car. The car was recovered and the woman will appear in Te Kūiti District Court next month.

POLICE are investigating a residential burglary on Queen St, Te Kūiti. A 2011 Toyota Hilux, lawnmowing and maintenance equipment was taken.

POLICE were called to eight family harm episodes in Te Kūiti and six in Ōtorohanga between January 10 and 17.
