Two major crashes in one day

SUNDAY afternoon spelled disaster on King Country roads as two state highways were shut for hours following serious crashes.

One person was seriously injured on SH30 in Benneydale as the result of a single vehicle crash at about 1.55pm.

Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency announced the road was back open at 6.50pm.

Just two hours after the Benneydale crash, police were called at 3.55pm to a crash on SH3 south of Ōtorohanga on the long straight stretch of road between Spicer and Ireland roads.

Police said one person appeared to have sustained serious injuries and diverted traffic along Old Te Kūiti Rd.

The road remained closed until about 8pm while the serious crash unit investigated the crash.

SH30 in Benneydale was the scene of what police have called a vehicle “incident” on Tuesday morning in which one person died.

Police said the incident with the vehicle happened at 4am on Tuesday and enquiries were ongoing as to the circumstances of the crash.
