Warning for Te Kūiti residents

TE KUĪTI people are advised to make a grab bag and have emergency supplies in case forecast heavy rain overnight tonight and tomorrow forces them to leave their homes

MetService New Zealand issued a heavy rain watch for the Waikato region, in place from 2am–3pm, Wednesday 1 February.

Given the large amount of rainfall and flooding the Waitomo district experienced in the past few days, Waitomo Emergency Management urges residents to continue to take care and stay aware of the conditions in their area as further rainfall could quickly exacerbate existing slips, river levels and produce further flooding quite quickly.

Low-lying areas of land alongside the Mangaokewa Stream and other local catchments may flood again if heavy rain eventuates.

The council roading team and contractors continue to work through jobs across the district. Visit the WDC website for a list of road closures and network updates.

Residents are advised to make and practice an emergency plan, and make a grab bag. View more on the Civil Defence website: civildefence.govt.nz

Pets also have to be included in emergency planning and preparation. Prepare an emergency plan that covers the major disasters that could affect animals in a family, farm, or workplace.

If people see rising water they are advised to act quickly. There are several agencies that can provide assistance, and a drop-in information centre is operating at Railway Building 3 on Rora St. Operating hours are 10am to 3pm. Access to MSD information, welfare support and other services are available.

People are advised to keep an eye on the MetService New Zealand Facebook page and website for the most up-to-date weather information.

The call centre is available 24/7 on 0800 932 4357. If someone’s life is at risk, dial 111 immediately.
