Behemoth onion unearthed

SPECTACULAR is the only possible description of an “enormous” onion anonymously donated to a member of the King Country News editorial team.

The secretive handover occurred when the journalist was out on her rounds on Ouruwhero Rd, in the vicinity of Ōtorohanga College.

“I’d varnish that and keep it forever,” said King Country News’ resident onion admirer, Mary Davis, when the versatile food item was brought back to the newspaper’s Te Kūiti premises.

The whopping vegetable – around the size of a small shot put – was grown by a modest Ōtorohanga district local, who unlike the growers of many such impressive produce items, did not want to be named.

This specimen weighed in at an impressive 1.5kg; the layered common or bulb onion is normally less than 200g in weight.

The alliaceous offering had sadly been partly eaten by a pest of some kind, which made three visible holes in the middle of its bulbous mass.

The venerable vegetable will be kept at the office to provide an excuse for staff members who find themselves crying at work, to claim to have been “only cutting this onion.”
