Call for action following assault

LONG-TIME Taumarunui resident Vivien Rauhina wants the community to take strong action following a vicious attack on a young woman at Matapuna on January 3.

Police are investigating the incident, but the offender has not been apprehended.

“I am calling for the community to come together; meaning the police, kaumatua, Māori wardens, women’s refuge, community leaders, self-defence tutors and other interested persons, to discuss what can be done to protect our treasured taonga, our women and our girls,” Vivien said.

“I personally cannot recall anything like this happening before in our town, so this truly concerns me. I just can’t sit back; I feel I must do something about it.”

Police are looking for a man with a tattoo near his jaw following the daylight assault, which took place on the Esplanade at about 5.30pm.

Following the incident, detective Kieryn Walton said the victim was traumatised and had to be supported by her family; he appealed for the public to help with the investigation.

The offender was described as being tall – roughly 182 cm – but of average build, and clean shaven.

He was wearing a red hoodie, dark red shorts and was carrying a skateboard. If you can help, contact police via the105 phone service or online at police.govt.nz/use-105, using Update My Report, referencing file number 230105/8487.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
