Close contests in Te Kūiti bowls finals

They don’t like winning easily at the Te Kūiti Bowling Club.

Colin Young won the men’s singles bowls by a narrow two points against Geoff McManus, while Mary Davis won the women’s equivalent on countback.

Down and out in the final, McManus mounted a comeback to draw level with Young and in the final game of the contest, the latter came up trumps with a fantastic two bowls to secure the title, 21-19.

Despite being pipped at the post, McManus said it was a fantastic game of bowls.

“It was an incredibly enjoyable game. Colin deserved his win but it was a cracking final.”

McManus said it was a cut-throat competition despite not many entrants.

“We had to win three matches to qualify and Colin lost his first game, so he needed to win to qualify and he managed to do that and then played some really good bowls for the rest of the day.”

Only four ladies entered the women’s competition, which Davis won on a countback from Michelle Wi.

“I was pretty happy to win the women’s singles championship for the first time,” she said.

Now, like Young, she will attend the Waikato Champion of Champions Singles and again go for glory.

“I’ll be off to the Waikato Champ of Champs and see how I go against the other club’s women’s winners.

“That’s a tough one, because there are some good bowlers around the Waikato, but I will certainly be having a go.”

Davis hasn’t played a lot of bowls lately and said her body was a bit stiff, but it was nice to win.
