Manslaughter trial starts

THE trial of two men accused of being responsible for the death of Te Kūiti father Anthony Bell started in Hamilton High Court last week.

The much-loved father of six died during a public altercation at the north end of Maniapoto St, Ōtorohanga in October 2021.

Two men were charged with manslaughter as a result and are defending themselves against the charges in the jury trial, being held before Justice Mathew Downs.

The men on trial are cousins Benjamin and Frank Sweeney.

The trial is expected to take up to three weeks.
