Museum Matters | Mōkau

IT was new exhibitions galore at Mōkau Museum and Gallery last month, with fresh material to view in both the museum and gallery.

Elvis may have left the building, but the Mōkau Museum and Gallery team took visitors back in time with the Jailhouse Theatre exhibition which opened on the first day of the new year.

In mid-January, a second exhibition opened showcasing the works of local pastel artists.

A collection of works from the New Plymouth members of the Pastel Artists of New Zealand (PANZ) group is on display now.

PANZaims to promote New Zealand pastel artists and pastel art as an art form in its own right, with exhibitions a core part of its efforts.

On the flip side to the exciting exhibitions, the museum has hit a stumbling block and needs community support in making its facilities accessible via a ramp.

Two years ago the project was costed and based on that quote the museum sourced funding.

But with Covid delays and inflation taking hold, the available funds don’t cover what they need to.

The museum is determined to get underway in April but needs to make up the financial shortfall first.

It is accepting all donations in cash or kind.

Donations can be made online via the museum’s bank account 15-3945-0167495-00 with “ramp” as the reference.

The museum is a registered charity and receipts for tax purposes are available upon request.

Anyone who can offer work in kind can contact Gareth on 027 2725644.

Last month saw several community activities be organised by the museum, including a movie day and a guided tour around town led by Kath Jennings, who provided some local history.
