TE Kūiti Museum and Gallery has reopened for 2023 and is looking forward to sharing Te Kūiti and surrounding districts history with the community.
Our current six-month display is on Te Tokanganui a Noho, Te Kūiti Pā, which opened in November.
This will be in place until around May when it will then be incorporated into the Iwi History display.
The new display will be on the Air Truck that was designed and developed locally. If you have any information that you think could be of use for this display, we welcome your contribution.
We have noticed a significant increase in the number of visitors to the museum, with an increase in locals experiencing what we have on display.
We are still looking at ways to build on the interactive displays for children. Adults have also enjoyed sitting down at the telephone exchange or typewriters and reliving their earlier work lives.
It is rewarding to see the reaction of people when they see the stories, photos and displays of ancestors or other well known people from the community.
We would like to acknowledge the local schools that have already visited the museum and as new displays develop this will add value to the local history curriculum.
We have plans to upgrade our gallery space this year too, so watch this space!
Did you know we have a large conference room upstairs available for hire? There is Wi-Fi available, a large screen TV, whiteboard, and would easily seat up to 30 people. Contact Jan Kearins.
Good news! We now also have volunteers available to be able to reopen the Historical House situated beside Tiffany’s Café and Restaurant.
The Historical House is really worth a look. It’s great to see how railway workers would have lived in these houses. They were compact but well designed. Opening hours for the Historical House are 10am – 12.30pm daily.
