KĀWHIA Tihiroa councillor Kit Jeffries raised the question of if the district security plan, mentioned in Ōtorohanga District Development Board’s report to the council, would include Kāwhia.
He said there had been several issues at Tom French Grove Reserve (Ocean Beach) and a couple of other “hot spots” in Kāwhia that weren’t covered by existing security cameras.
“It would be useful to have those considered at least.”
One section of the development board’s report noted that it was involved in hosting a community forum to discuss the provision of security cameras in town, alongside police, the council and Ōtorohanga Business Association.
The council’s group manager of strategy and community Nardia Gower said the project, led by sergeant Jimmie Walker, was primarily about what could be done for the township itself.
“If there is appetite by ward councillors to look at other areas, then we would need to have a further discussion about how that could be folded into the project.”
Nardia said council staff were working to secure quotes, which were proving difficult to get.
At the business community meeting last year, quotes were said to be anywhere between $70,000 and $170,000.
