Waitomo Sports Day back for 2023

AFTER a Covid-enforced holiday in 2022, Waitomo Caves Sports Day is back for 2023.

Shearing, wood chopping, horse sports, a foot race, easter egg hunt, bouncy castles and a whole lot else is scheduled for Saturday.

Waitomo Caves Sports Day president Adrian Verry said they had an action-packed day lined up for spectators.

“The Easter Egg hunt is always a highlight.

“That’s taking place at 11am and then we hope people will stick around and take part or watch the other events going on.

“They can bring their lunch and make a real day of it. We’re excited that it’s back for 2023, having been forced to cancel it last year due to Covid-19 restrictions.

“We ran it in 2021 but had the same issue in 2020 when we were forced to cancel because of Covid-19.”

Verry said more than 30 people had signed up to compete in the wood chopping.

“It’s always a great event to watch, while there’s going to be a strong field for the shearing because we even have a test match against Wales, which will be exciting.

“People always enjoy the horse events and our foot race is back, and always popular.”

The annual foot race has a $500 winner’s purse for the male and female in the open category. There are also under-16 and under-12 races.

“We have some generous supporters for the sports day who put up a bit of money and the race is always a real highlight.”

The sports day is held every year on the last weekend in March, and Verry said it always attracted a large number of people.

“We really hope that this year will be no different and people will come along and support the event.”
