Surfacing complete at tunnel bypass

Waka Kotahi says the surfacing at the Awakino Tunnel Bypass has been completed – just 18 months after the bypass was opened in August 2021.

In March 2022, Waka Kotahi stated the final sealing work would be completed in the summer of 2022-23, which was delayed by the wet weather.

Travellers on SH3 will now benefit from the completed surfacing works at the Awakino Tunnel Bypass.

Traffic signals have been removed, the temporary speed limit has been lifted and the passing lane is open.

The Awakino Tunnel Bypass project incorporates a new rest area and a walkway beneath one of the new bridges to the closed tunnel.

The history of the area is shown on the storyboards along the walkway.
