Football teams make positive start to competitions

The Ram Chetty era has ended for Ōtorohanga College.

Chetty, a master football coach who often had the college teams punching well above their weight, has moved down the road to Te Kūiti High School and left new coaches holding the fort at Ōtorohanga College.

He ran football at the college for more than a decade, so has left some big boots to fill.

Ōtorohanga College faced Te Awamutu College second XI boys first up in their grading clashes and produced a 5-all thriller at Ōtorohanga College.

The following week, it was all one-way traffic as they faced Taumarunui High School’s junior boys’ team and came out emphatic 19-0 winners.

It was a good chance for Ōtorohanga College to play a number of new footballers as well as try out some new combinations.

Te Kūiti High School also had a senior boys’ team and they won by the exact same margin as Ōtorohanga College – a whopping 19-0, before falling 5-0 to a Rototuna High School side.

The grading games were a chance for teams to dust off their cobwebs and be placed into divisions accordingly.

Ōtorohanga College came up against the same Rototuna side their neighbours had played in grading and produced an exciting 3-all draw, a game both teams had chances to win.

This weekend they do battle against St Paul’s Collegiate and will be hoping for a victory.

Te Kūiti High School senior boys’ team started their division with a 2-1 loss to another Rototuna side, while this weekend they have the bye.

Taumarunui High School junior boys were beaten 7-2 by St John’s College, while Te Kūiti’s junior boys had a 1-all draw with Paeroa.

In the senior girls’ section, Ōtorohanga College got off to a fast start winning 7-1 in their match against Waikato Diocesan.

It was a match played in wet conditions and after just one second-half goal, Ōtorohanga hammered home a further six to win emphatically.

Te Kūiti won 3-0 against Rototuna High School and this week face their fellow King Country rivals in what should be a cracking match.
