Slow progress at Mōkau Museum

Bad weather prevented exterior work on the Mōkau Museum’s four-month makeover this week, but the museum’s volunteers have remained busy with inside work.

Museum collection and community co-ordinator, Kath Jennings, said though volunteers had done quite a bit of painting inside, rain meant builders had been unable to push ahead with construction of disabled access and the building’s new facade.

The builders made a good start removing the building’s frontage last week but no construction had been done on the inside.

Meanwhile, the volunteers are pushing ahead with necessary filing, archiving and cataloguing of photos and exhibits ahead of the planned August reopening.

The museum will remain closed to the public for four months, but special arrangements can be made to open for groups on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.

“We can help people who want to do photocopying (of records) and things like that. But they will have to understand that they will not get the full experience, because we are in the process of changing exhibitions around and stuff,” Kath said.
