Sausage rolls are a classic and savory treat.
MOST of us will be glued to the TV on Sunday as New Zealand goes after its third Rugby World Cup title – a position not many of us really thought it would be in at the start of the competition!
Nevertheless, they are there and being a New Zealand morning, the classic dish of sausage rolls really comes into its own for games such as this.
Sausage rolls are a classic and savory treat loved by people of all ages. With flaky pastry and a flavourful sausage filling, they’re always a hit.
You can make the filling the night before and store in the fridge.
Ingredients:
For the pastry:
- sheets of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
- egg, beaten (for egg wash)
For the filling:
- roll of sausage meat
225gm mince
- small onion, finely chopped
- cloves garlic, minced
11/2 tsp mixed herbs
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 C breadcrumbs
1/4 C milk
- egg
Method:
Preheat the oven to 200C, and line a baking sheet with baking paper.
In a mixing bowl, combine the meats. In a separate bowl, soak the breadcrumbs in milk until they soften.
Add the softened breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, mixed herbs, salt, and black pepper to the meat mixture. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
In a small bowl, beat the egg and then add it to the meat mixture. This will help bind the filling together.
Lay out one sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Cut it in half lengthwise, so you have two long rectangles.
Place a generous portion of the sausage mixture along the centre of each pastry rectangle, leaving some space around the edges.
Carefully fold the pastry over the filling, and press the edges together to seal.
Repeat the process with the second sheet of puff pastry. Cut each long roll into smaller, bite-sized pieces.
Place the sausage rolls on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a bit of space between each.
Brush the tops of the sausage rolls with the beaten egg which will give them a beautiful golden finish when cooked.
Bake in for 20-25 minutes or until the sausage rolls are golden brown and cooked through.
Serve your homemade sausage rolls warm, either on their own or with your favorite dipping sauce, such as tomato sauce, sweet chilli sauce, or whatever takes your fancy.
