Pink mohawk for breast cancer

MERV Donaldson from Piopio is rocking a hot pink mohawk – and a matching beard – all for breast cancer.

Any mohawk is a big statement, but this one is next level.

Merv wanted to raise money for breast cancer support and research; it was also a way to honour women.

He has been a truck driver for 50 years, currently at PTL, and says he couldn’t do it without the support of his “lovely lady” and three daughters.

“If it wasn’t for the women supporting us, we men would be buggered,” he said.

“We go out to work, but they work just as hard, looking after the kids. And they often have part-time jobs these days too.”

How does he feel walking around like that?

“It doesn’t worry me, because I’m not looking at it.”

It’s early in the fundraising journey.

“We’ve only raised a couple of hundred dollars so far, but every dollar in the kitty counts,” Merv told King Country News.

He said he’d received nothing but positive feedback, with “looks awesome bro” being a typical example.

Club manager Karen Lloyd did the hairdressing at the Piopio Cosmopolitan club, cheered along by a room full of locals on Sunday.

“At the end of the month he’ll then shave his beard off. I’ve never seen him without a beard so that’s going to be hilarious,” Karen said.
