Naked man attacks trucks

Two King Country truck drivers can add a late-night naked road encounter to their accumulated tales of the road.

As they drove through Ōtorohanga in the early hours of Saturday, a naked pedestrian ran in front of their trucks, attacking panels and windows with his fists.

The first truck driver told police he was travelling north along Maniapoto St at about 2am, when a male pedestrian jumped in front of his vehicle near the intersection with Huipitea Drive and began yelling that he wanted a ride.

The pedestrian then allegedly began punching the front of the truck and its windows, also aiming blows at a wing mirror, which broke off the side of the truck.

The man then allegedly stripped off his clothes and turned his attention to a second truck, which was also travelling south on Maniapoto St, likewise punching that vehicle’s doors and windows.

After some time, the man ceased his attack and walked off towards Ōtorohanga Countdown Supermarket. He was seen kicking a car in the supermarket carpark, before walking on toward McDonalds.

Sometime later, police located the man in Maniapoto St, still naked. They arrested and charged him with disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence, wilful damage and obscenely exposing his person in public. He was remanded in custody.

Police said a 41-year-old Te Awamutu man appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Monday but took no plea. He was remanded in custody once again, this time to appear on November 7.
