The crash site was on SH4 about half a kilometre above Madona Falls.
A 25-YEAR-OLD driver had a lucky escape when his car crashed on State Highway 4 near Madonna Falls on Saturday afternoon.
The man’s green 1997 Honda CRV was northbound, approaching a left-hand bend when it slid-out on the wet surface at about 3pm.
The driver, who was the sole occupant, had attempted to correct the slide but ended up flipping his vehicle onto its roof.
It came to rest in the northbound lane.
The man extricated himself ahead of the arrival of an ambulance and the Piopio and Te Kūiti volunteer fire brigades.
“It was a lucky escape, especially as he was on a stretch of road with steep banks.
“He should probably have bought himself a Lotto ticket,” Sergeant Jimmie Walker said.
