Scholarship boost

The four year old Taumarunui High School Kia Manawanui Scholarship has received a significant boost to assist school leavers.  The Founder of Craigs Investment Partners and former Taumarunui High School pupil Neil Craig said he and the Craig family are backing scholarship with at least $100,000 over the next three years. The scholarship give financial support to  students attending a university, technical institute, or trade-based training establishment.

Wairere Power Station marks 100 years of hydropower and community connection

Wairere Power Station marked 100 years of hydropower and community connection last month with a private event attended by iwi, hapū, community leaders, friends, and staff past and present. The day also recognised the strong environmental partnership between King Country Energy and iwi, particularly in the protection of the elver migration along the Mōkau River.

Road closure

A stretch of State Highway 3 near Ahititi will be closed for five days from January 16 so that culverts can be replaced and bridge project work carried out. The alternate routes include using highways 4,1 or 43.

Te Huia push

Waikato Regional Council will ask the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Board to approve a one-year extension of the Te Huia passenger rail service. A draft letter approved says the council supports the extension to enable patronage to recover and test the impact of benefits accruing from opening of City Rail Link later this year.

Mayors together

Waikato’s mayors and the Waikato Regional Council chair will work together to respond to local government reform proposals. At the first Waikato mayoral forum meeting of the new triennium, Hamilton mayor Tim Macindoe was elected to the chair.
