Ōtorohanga  senior rugby sides registered two wins in front of home supporters at Island Reserve on Saturday.

Hooker Joel Smyth scored a brace of tries in Ōtorohanga Sports’ premier gold’s win against United Matamata Sports. Ōtorohanga won  30-19.

Fullback Jake Laurent, winger Josaia Tuikubulau and lock Turuva Lumelume rounded out the five-pointers in the five tries to three victory.

First five-eighth and captain Manaaki Rewi-Wetini added a conversion and a penalty goal off the kicking tee.

In the earlier match, the Ōtorohanga Sports premier B team were beaten 24-7 by United Matamata Sports B.Reserve Isoa Dobui was the only try scorer for the blues, adding to his impressive season. Number 10 Zach Coles converted Dobui’s try.

Ōtorohanga were victorious against Hamilton Marist-University combined in the women’s premiership match.

The home side took the win 51-31.

Second five-eighth Koiatarau Edwards helped herself three of her team’s nine tries. Other scorers included fullback Katie Corbett, flanker Terri King, left winger Kura Edwards and prop Shaolin Tapiata. Halfback Tayla Toa slotted three conversions.

This Saturday, the Ōtorohanga men host University.

The women’s squad will travel to Cambridge in search of a round eight win against Mel-tap (Melville-Hautapu combined).

When they faced off in round one, Mel-tap won 22-15 at Island Reserve.
