Gas thieves active

Constable Chris Aspin

King Country police have seen an increase in fuel thefts.

Offenders are targeting fuel tanks and heavy machinery such as tractors, diggers, and loaders across rural areas. These offences can have a significant impact on businesses and livelihoods.

We encourage the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or thefts promptly, as this information helps police build a clearer picture of offending patterns and enables us to better target patrols.

Following a serious assault reported in Piopio a few weeks ago, Police have now arrested and charged a 27-year-old man. The individual was already subject to bail conditions for offences outside the district and has since been released on bail to an address in the South Island.

Staff were also involved in a failing-to-stop incident that began in Waitomo. The vehicle was later observed driving dangerously around Te Kuiti township and there were concerning reports from both police and members of the public. Officers apprehended the 28-year-old female driver while she was out of the vehicle.

She was transported to Waikato Hospital for medical treatment. The vehicle has been impounded, and charges will likely follow. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, although there were concerns given the incident occurred close to school pick-up time.

Across the district, police received an increased number of driving-related complaints over the long weekend. Many of these involved poor decision-making by drivers, highlighting the importance of patience, safe speeds, and responsible driving behaviour, particularly during busy travel periods.

A 30-year-old man was issued a summons to appear in court after being observed wearing gang insignia in Ōtorohanga. A 30-year-old male was also summonsed to appear in Court for wearing gang insignia after being sighted in Te Kuiti.

A 44-year-old man was summonsed to court after being found driving with excess breath alcohol in Te Kuiti.

A quad bike was located and impounded following a failing-to-stop incident in Te Kuiti.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for breaching his bail conditions after failing to reside at his listed Hamilton address.

As always, we appreciate the continued support, please continue to look out for one another and report any suspicious activity when it is observed.

Be well and stay safe.
