Ruapehu perspective
A statement from the Mayor on the Ruapehu District Council website says: Council has a responsibility to carefully consider the opportunities, challenges, costs, and benefits of any option. Community feedback is an important part of that process.
I attended two public meetings on the proposed local government amalgamation, hoping to gain a clear understanding of the options for the future of our district.
No detailed operational models or “how this would work” scenarios were presented, apart from the mayor’s federation model.
It appears Ruapehu District Council has not taken a proactive role in engaging with neighbouring councils on alternatives. At best, there appears to have been only limited contact, while neighbouring councils continue progressing their more collaborative and engaged “Head Start” models.
The recent online council survey showed strong community support for dividing the district, with northern communities aligning with Waitomo, Ōtorohanga or even Taupō, while southern communities look south.
This option has been largely absent from public presentations and discussion. If this reflects significant community sentiment, why isn’t it helping shape the conversation? And where do our councillors stand?
We should be bold, embrace change where it benefits our communities, and position our district for a stronger future. I’m not suggesting we abandon our identity – quite the opposite. We should carry our proud heritage forward, stand tall, make our case with confidence, and ensure our communities emerge stronger as a result. (Abridged)
