Ōtewā champions
Gumboot Gang from Ōtewā School near Ōtorohanga claimed the 2026 AgriKidsNZ Grand Champions title at the Junior Young Farmer of the Year grand final in New Plymouth last week.
The team, who won the regional final in Te Teko in March, came out on top against primary school teams from across the country in a competition testing practical skills, teamwork and agricultural knowledge.
“I don’t think I can describe it – it’s just too good,” said Laura Connoly. Isaac Wilson said all the hard work was stressful at times, but it paid off.
A year 10 duo from Putāruru College and Rotorua’s John Paul College were crowned the 2026 FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year .
The Young Farmer of the Year contest is in its 58th year. The senior title went to Otago-Southland farmer Tom Slee.
Biz brekkie
Legendary Te Kūiti is reviving its members-only business breakfast, starting at he Wool Press cafe next Thursday. Textile conservator Dr Rangi Te Kanawa will be the guest speaker and will focus on celebrating the breadth of knowledge and talent in Te Kūiti.
Funding round
Applications for the Sport New Zealand’s Rural Travel Fund for the Ōtorohanga district have opened. The fund helps cover the cost of petrol and van hires to help youth from rural communities participate in sport, games and physical activities that contribute to their physical and mental health.
On the road
The Hamilton Car Club’s annual rally sprint is set to return to the Ōtorohanga district in September. Ōtorohanga District Council has given public notice of its intention to close Hoddle Road and Tauraroa Valley Road on September 6 from 9am to allow the rally sprint to take place.
Driving safety
Youth service provider Number Twelve is running a subsidised defensive driving course in Ōtorohanga later this month, offering young drivers the chance to improve their driving skills. The course, which normally costs $250, is being offered for $20. Driver must have obtained their restricted licence to be eligible.
On the trail
Planning is underway for a repeat of this year’s Waipā Creative Trail. Co-organiser, ceramic artist Alex Wilkinson told The News the call for a repeat was coming from participants and visitors. She said a conservative estimate of visitor numbers this year was around 700.
Club award
Incoming president Bill Reymer was presented with the Harcourt Rawlings Memorial award for outstanding contribution at the Ōtorohanga Vintage Machinery Club prizegiving last Friday.
