THE Te Kūiti & Districts Pipe Band Youth Corps is back from summer school, after being given generous support from this community.
They say “thank you” for the donations that allowed them to travel to Christchurch from January 10 to 14.
The band comprises four D’Ath children: Isabella, Arthur, Dominic and Sarah, alongside Glen O’Halloran. Glen attends Te Kūiti primary, while the other four are homeschooled.
“Awesome, challenging and exciting,” is how the collective describes the experience.
Lessons with mid-section drumming tutor Tiffany Gilchrist were a highlight, especially for Isabella and Sarah.
“She taught us the Wellerman,” Sarah said, referring to a famous Kiwi sea shanty which became a worldwide viral hit in 2020.
“The accommodation and food were also amazing,” they all agreed, especially the post-lunch ice-blocks.
They hope to return next year.
Two of the members won tuition scholarships for next years’ summer school: Dominic won the Bob Scott Memorial Scholarship and Sarah won the RNZPBA scholarship. Isabella earned a set of tenor drumsticks.
