Unveiling of plaque today

PUBLIC interest has ramped up this week, with all wondering what is covered in plastic near Te Kūiti’s shearer statue.

This morning at 9am, Sir David Fagan and John Fagan will unveil a plaque reinforcing the town’s status as Shearing Capital of the World.

John was a driving force in getting the shearer statue erected in March 1994.

Sealed in the statue are three time capsules, with the first due to be opened next year, and the others in 2054 and 2084.

The plaque was thought to be complementary to the statue, which visitors often stop at for a photo opportunity.

It was designed as a way of acknowledging and celebrating Te Kūiti’s role in the shearing industry and its history; it will be a permanent reminder for years to come.

The unveiling and blessing of the plaque this morning coincides with the beginning of the New Zealand Shearing Championships, which runs until Saturday at the Les Munro Centre.
